Description:
An installation
sculpture
that has different elements through its library location. Eight natural granite boulders, sandblasted with fragments of a pattern, are asymmetrically placed in the exterior garden in front of a glass atrium. Some of the patterns on them are derived from the interior murals. From the garden, through the atrium glass, two murals can be seen, each constructed of six inch by six inch aluminum tile squares, colored to match the atrium framework. All the tile units are the same pattern, printed with three colorways, and attached to the wall with matching screws.

Remarks:
Commissioned by the
Portland
Public Library's Art Acquisitions Committee. Funding for the
sculpture
was provided for, in full, by the Library's Chaplin Arts Fund, which is restricted to the purchase of art for the
Portland
Public Library. The concept of the
sculpture
is the result of time spent outside the Library and in Monument Square, in daylight, evening, and night light. The rocks represent history, antiquity, and are symbols of time. Original agreements with the artists provided for the development of a planted garden surrounding the rocks, but the area was paved instead, and the artists do not approve of this change. IAS files contain a dedication program for the installation, which includes a coloring book of the installation.
