Remarks:
The shield and scrollwork were salvaged from the wreckage of the U.S.S.
Maine
, which was blown up in Havana Harbor, Cuba, Feb. 15, 1898. The City of
Bangor
acquired the pieces in 1913, with the intent of erecting a monument, but the pieces were placed in storage in the City's Sewer Department. In 1920, an employee of the Department sold large fragments of the scrollwork to the Union Iron Works. The shield itself was retrieved and ultimately became part of the monument. The Chamber of Commerce donated $100 towards the work and the City appropriated $6,000. Traditionally, a wreath is laid at the monument every Feb. 15 in memory of those who perished with the U.S.S.
Maine
. Repairs were made on the monument about 1990. The base was reset and sealed to prevent water penetration. The metal elements were reinforced to prevent theft and electrical work was done. IAS files contain notes from the Reference Department of the
Bangor
Public Library detailing the history of the monument. For related reading, see the
Bangor
Daily News, Oct. 18, 1922.
