Remarks:
The
sculpture
is a replacement for a bust of Anna Gray Noe (see IAS LA000451) that was dedicated on the same site with the opening of the Park on May 24, 1975, and later destroyed because it did not resemble Mrs. Noe closely enough. The
sculpture
commemorates Anna Gray Sweeney Noe (1901-1972) for whom the Park is named. Mrs. Noe was the former First Lady of
Louisiana
, wife of former Governor James A. Noe, active in civic activities and especially in garden club and beautification projects. The replacement
sculpture
was commissioned by Mrs. Noe's daughter, Linda Noe Laine, and Laine's daughter, Christel Laine, as part of an identical pair, the other bust dedicated at the Anna Gray Noe Alumni Center at Northeast
Louisiana
University on October 12, 1991. IAS files contain dedication program and articles from The News-Star (
Monroe
, LA): Oct. 14, 1991, pg. 1, and Oct. 27, 1991.
