Description:
Sculpture
consisting of a central inscribed stele flanked by standing figures of a World War I Doughboy (proper left) and a World War I sailor (proper right);
sculpture
supported on a low, stepped base. Doughboy stands at attention, whereas sailor stands at parade rest; both are dressed in uniform. Doughboy grips barrel of rifle with proper right hand (butt of gun rests on ground, adjacent to feet); sword hangs at proper left hip. On stele, above inscription, is an eagle in relief, its wings outspread and an unfurling banner in its beak.

Remarks:
Lambert designed the monument, which was dedicated on Veterans Day, 1933. IAS files contain copy of article from
Springfield
Sun, Nov. 11, 1933, which states that a bronze plaque was to be added to the monument bearing the names of the veterans honored.
