    Description:
An Army soldier stands dressed in a combat uniform with his proper left leg and foot slightly forward and elevated on a rock. With his proper right hand he holds a rifle horizontally at his side. He bends his proper left arm, holding on to the strap of a pouch at chest-level with his hand. He wears a beret, a shirt with the sleeve rolled up, and combat boots. He carries a canteen and army pouches around his waist. The sculpture is mounted atop several slabs of stone. Lying on the ground in front of the sculpture are five rectangular stones containing the names of 248 soldiers who died in a plane crash in December 1985 on their way back from peacekeeping duties in the Middle East. On flagpoles to the left of the sculpture are the United States flag, the Kentucky State flag, and a military flag. Pear trees, representing each of the soldiers who died, are planted behind the sculpture in straight rows. The sculpture is lighted at night.

The soldier depicted is representative of a member of the multinational peacekeeping force in the Sinai. The inscription on a nearby plaque reads: Fort Campbell Memorial Park/Dedicated to the 248 Fort Campbell/soldiers who died on December 12, 1985/at Gander, Newfoundland while/returning from a peace keeping/mission in the Sinai, Presented in honor/of all soldiers who serve at Fort/Campbell. And in recognition of the/importance of their mission to this community and to our country. Five stone slabs in front of the sculpture list the names of the 248 soldiers who died. IAS files contain a related article from the Lexington Herald-Leader, Dec. 13, 1994; and a photocopy of a Hopkinsville brochure.
