    Remarks:
William Goebel (1856-1900) was a businessman, lawyer, and State Senator of Kentucky from 1886 to 1900. He was shot by an assassin in 1900, after which the Legislature declared him duly elected Governor. He took the oath of office and died on the same afternoon, February 3, 1900. The monument has been known as "The Orator" and was erected by The Goebel Monument Commission at a cost of slightly less than $15,000, collected by private subscription. The base was erected by Williams Adams & Son of Lexington, Kentucky. The inscriptions on the base were chosen by William Goebel's brother, Arthur. The quotation on the upper front of the base is reportedly Goebel's last words; the couplet below it was composed by Mrs. Jennie C. Morton.
