St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral began with the lying of its cornerstone in July 1816, and was consecrated in 1819. The Cathedral is on the Historic American Buildings Survey (1934) and the National Historic Register. The text above sculpture reads: The Church of the Living/God. The Pillar and/Ground of the Truth. IAS files contain brochure which gives history of the Cathedral.
