Located Hill overlooking rest area on I-70, 3 miles east of Paxico exit, Wabaunsee County, Kansas
    Remarks:
The artist created the sculpture while he was attending the University of Kansas, 1968-1970, as part of his thesis for a Master of Fine Arts degree. It was donated at no cost to the state, except for the concrete foundation and transportation from Lawrence, Kansas. The sculpture design represents the physical and visual strength of the windmills, which harnessed the wind to keep Kansas land from drying out. A bronze plaque on a rectangular limestone block located to the east of the sculpture reads: GUARD OF THE PLAINS/BY/JAMES KIRBY JOHNSON, SCULPTOR/ERECTED NOVEMBER 1970/BY/KANSAS HIGHWAY COMMISSION. IAS files contain a related article from the Topeka Capital-Journal, March 8, 1987 and specification plans for the sculpture.
