Description:
A soldier holding a flag in his proper left hand stands atop an elaborate column. At the base of the column is a granite ashlar through which cannons protrude. Above this is a square element with turrets at each corner, in front of which stand bronze figures --an infantryman, a sailor, an artilleryman, and a cavalryman. At the bottom of the column is a bronze relief depicting the Battle of the Wilderness. Above the relief is a section of granite with twelve small Corinthian columns. The top portion of the central column is composed of rusticated granite.
