Description:
The
sculpture
depicts Little Balser Brent, the hero of Charles Major's 1901 book "The Bears of Blue River," a story about an
Indiana
boy's adventures with bears while growing up along the Blue River in early 19th century
Indiana
. Little Balser is seen dressed in buckskin, two bear cubs held up in his hands, and his back against the side of a rock. The
sculpture
is installed atop a limestone base surrounded by a low wrought iron fence.

author Charles Major was created by the daughter of Laura Stout, a former

Indiana
neighbor of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Major. The
sculpture
was initially installed at the Charles Major Elementary School in
Shelbyville
, but was moved to its current site in 1980 when the school was modified to serve as a senior citizens apartment house. A bronze inscription plaque on the left side of the fence surrounding the
sculpture
reads: IN TRIBUTE TO-/CHARLES MAJOR/-NATIVE SON-/-AUTHOR IF-/THE BEARS OF BLUE RIVER. The inscription on the back of the fence reads: PRESENTED TO/THE CITY OF
SHELBYVILLE
, IND./AUGUST - 1980 - BY/D. & T. FENCE CO./DAVID NEW - TODD HARDIN.
