    Description: 
    A Civil War soldier stands at rest. He holds a rifle with both hands in front of him. The butt rests near his proper right foot. He is wearing a canteen. The sculpture is mounted atop a graduated shaft with a stepped bottom. On the front of the base is a bas-relief depiction of crossed flags. On the rear, two crossed rifles are shown in relief.

    Cost $2,000. Funds for the project were raised in a 6-year drive by Lilly Y. Bradley on behalf of the Bartow County United Daughters of the Confederacy. Sculpture honors the men from Bartow County who fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War. IAS files contain related excerpts from Isabell Smith Buzzett's "Confederate Monuments of Georgia," Atlanta: Atlanta Chapter No. 18, United Daughters of the Confederacy, 1984, pg. 9; Frank M. McKenney's "The Standing Army," Alpharetta, G.A.: W.H. Wolfe Associates, 1993, pg. 19-20; Ralph W. Widener's "Confederate Monuments: Enduring Symbols of the South and the War Between the States," Washington, D.C.: Andromeda Associates, 1982, pg. 47. Widener's text gives unveiling date of April 26, 1878, which refers to earlier obelisk memorial at that site.
