A moustached Confederate sentinel wears a wide-brimmed campaign hat and stands at rest holding his rifle with butt to ground in front of him. His proper left hand is above his proper right hand, both on the barrel. A blanket roll is above his proper left shoulder and tied at his proper right hip. The soldier wears a waist-length jacket with a high collar, and has a bayonet and scabbard with canteen to the rear at his proper left hip. A canteen strap goes over his proper right shoulder. A tree trunk raises to thigh level at the rear of the soldier's proper right leg. The soldier is mounted upon a rough-hewn granite shaft set on a stepped base. Relief carvings adorn the midsection of the base. On the right side there is a relief of a Confederate battle flag draped across a staff; on the rear there is a relief of crossed flags on staffs; on the left side there is a relief of vertical percussion rifles.

Marion County Judicial Center, 110 N.W. 1st Avenue, Southeast corner, Ocala, Florida
    Provenance:
Formerly located Courthouse Square, Southwest corner, at East Silver Springs Boulevard & South Magnolia Avenue, Ocala, Florida 1908-1991.
    Remarks:
This monument which is known as "Johnny Reb" commemorates the Confederate soldiers of the Civil War. It was erected by the Dickison Chapter No. 56, United Daughters of the Confederacy. The monument was originally installed near the old courthouse in downtown Ocala, but was relocated to its current site in 1991 for the opening of the new Marion County Judicial Center (which may also be referred to as the Marion County Courthouse). Controversy arose when it was relocated because some were opposed to a Confederate monument on public property. IAS files contain the following newspaper articles: The Ocala Banner, May 1, 1908, pg. 1, 4, 9 (which includes a discussion of the dedication and a list of names of contributors); and the Ocala Star-Banner, April 15, 1988, pg. 7C, Aug. 7, 1991.
