The monument was erected to the memory of the 26th Regiment Connecticut Volunteer Infantry. The 26th participated in the Siege of Port Hudson, May 27th to July 7, 1863. The monument cost $2,000, of which $1,000 was appropriated by the State Legislature in 1899, and the remaining $1,000 matched locally. A Monument Committee was established to erect the monument, with L. O. Smith of New York as chairman.
