Remarks:
Bristol
was the first town in
Connecticut
to erect a Civil War Monument. The
Bristol
Soldiers' Monument Committee was formed in 1865, at the suggestion of Joseph F. Peck, Sr., one of the town's leading citizens. Peck organized the committee for the monument, purchased the site, furnished transportation for the monument, and paid Batterson $1,500. In addition, there was widespread support from small contributors. The town was divided into thirteen districts and two people were named for each district as solicitors. The
Bristol
Public Library has 17 notebooks listing individual subscriptions of $1.00.
IAS files contain a copy of an article in
Bristol
Press (
Bristol
, CT), May 29, 1988 discussing the rededication of the memorial and an undated
Bristol
Historical Society flyer on the monument.
