Remarks:
The
sculpture
was funded by a $15,000 bequest left by Elisha Leavenworth, a prominent Waterbury businessman and benefactor, in 1911. The artist was selected in 1913. His first model for the memorial was rejected because it was felt Franklin looked too uncomfortable on the bench and looked too old. Bartlett's second model was approved and artisans were hired to cast the monument in Baltimore.
