Digital Reference:  Medium:  Sculpture: carved cottonwood; Base: metal and concrete. Description:  Mermaid figure is set onto a rock-like base. She has long hair which covers her breasts and a long upcurved tail. A fantastical creature called "Quirk" (as in quirk of nature) is seated on the end of the tail. "Quirk" is much smaller proportionally, is bald and has pointed ears. A low wooden fence encircles the sculpture. Remarks:  The cottonwood tree from which this work is sculpted was originally on a farm owned by the Reiboldt family. In its sculpted form, it was located at Reiboldt Electric before being moved about 1989. The sculpture was adopted by the Laureate Omicron Chapter of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority who through the Save the Sculpture Foundation, Sterling, Colorado. The Chapter paid for two floodlights for the piece and for its renovation and relocation. IAS files include a related article from Sterling Weekly News, July 12, 1984, an undated self-guided tour list which gives the sculpture's address as 440 Charmony Frontage Road and an Adopt-A-Tree contract between Laureate Omicron Chapter, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and the Save the Sculptures Foundation.
