Remarks:
One of thirty sculptural replacement markers commissioned by Lake County for significant sites in the historic mining districts to the east of
Leadville
. The Small Hopes Mining Company, organized in Denver in 1878, operated the Robert Emmett Mine. This mine was the scene of a battle between strikers and mine guards during the Strike of 1896. It was purchased by Empire Zinc Co. in 1916 for an estimated $500,000.
