    Remarks:
One of thirty sculptural replacement markers commissioned by Lake County for significant sites in the historic mining districts to the east of Leadville. The Coronado Mine was the site of bloody fighting during the miners' strike of 1896. Miners were striking to raise wages from $2.50 a day (set during the Silver Panic of 1893) to $3.00 a day. The strike closed 90% of the mines. Three men were killed during the Coronado violence. One of them, Jerry O'Keefe, a Leadville fireman, was shot by the strikers. The strike ended March 9, 1897. Many of the mines, which had suffered water damage during the strike, never reopened.
