Commissioned by the City of Boulder and Aesthetic Action, Inc., a private arts group. The cost of $10,000 was divided between the City and Aesthetic Action and a portion of the funds came from private donations. The original model had a multi-colored disk at the bottom center, which was never part of the final piece. The sculpture is reportedly Boulder's first piece of public art. Weak spots in the piece were rewelded in May 1977 after being loosened by 100 mph winds. Prior to being moved from Broadway & Baseline Road to Boulder Municipal Airport in 1986, the piece was repaired with welded steel.
