Description:
Full-length male figure of a seaman. He wears thigh-high foul weather boots, pants, and a shirt with the sleeves rolled above the elbows. He has on a brimmed hat which is strapped under his chin. He holds onto a ship's wheel with both hands. His head is turned to the proper right. The wheel is wooden; the

is concrete colored to resemble weathered bronze. The
sculpture
stands on a large black granite rectangular base.

Remarks:
The
sculpture
originally stood in front of the Helms Bakery in Los Angeles, where it served as a trademark for the company. The Helms Bakery closed in 1969, and in 1971, The Helmsman
sculpture
was donated to Los Angeles County by the Helms family. The
sculpture
was moved to its current location in 1971. The wooden ship wheel is replaced occasionally with a new one. IAS files contain a copy of a related article from Los Angeles Times, Oct. 17, 1994 and a related excerpt from Howard Gregory's "Southern
California
Sea Coast Then and Now".
