    Description:
A site installation consisting of six features. A line of blue glass leads from a street level sidewalk up the middle of a staircase and into a plaza. On the plaza at the end of the blue glass line is a tall polished black granite rectangular monolith. On the front face of the monolith is a gold sun disk medallion. There is blue neon lighting at the back of the monolith. At the north end of the plaza is a stepped pyramid site sculpture. At the opposite end of the plaza is a stainless steel fountain whose shape mirrors that of the stepped pyramid. At the intersection of Hope and 6th Streets is a large medallion made of bronze bolts inlaid in the asphalt, arranged in the pattern of a sunburst. The sixth feature is a Memorialization Room and walkway. The room is situated underneath a stair landing. It is white and has a gold leaf domed ceiling. Directly under the dome on the floor is a black polished granite circle with a photo emulsion of the Earth. The doors to the room are bronze and are sculpted with a pattern of numbers and letters. Leading to the Memorialization Room is a polished black granite walkway with inlaid rectangles of bronze.

    Remarks:
Nearby plaque: " "Site/ Memory/ Reflection" was commissioned by Obayashi America Corporation and The Koll Company as part of the Public Art Programs of the Community Redevelopment Agency. The work was conceived by Lita Albuquerque and completed by collaboration with Kohn/Pederson/Fox, Langdon Wilson Architects, The SWA Group, Lonny Gans and Associates and Peter Carlson Enterprises. A single work of art, "Site/ Memory/ Reflection" consists of numerous sculptural and architectural elements in alignment with each other. These elements draw the site together, relate it to the imagery of the Central Library, and suggest a spiritual and universal whole."
The installation was a Percent For Art funded project. Budget for the installation was approx. $650,000. At the time of the SOS! survey, a blue granite circle remained to be installed in the sidewalk at the start of the blue glass line. Diane Buckler was the artist responsible for the photo emulsion of Earth.
The building and plaza the installation was designed for are located on the site of the former Church of the Open Door, which was destroyed in the 1987 earthquake. The names listed on the granite paver are those of the pastors of the church. The Memorialization Room is equipped with benches and a video which recounts the history of the church.
Nearby plaque and artist's correspondence refer to the title as "Site/ Memory/ Reflection"; SOS! survey cites title as "Site, Memory and Reflection". IAS files contain copies of preliminary and final art plans, artist's statements and related correspondence. IAS files contain copies of related articles from Downtown News, Aug. 28, 1989 and June 4, 1990, and Los Angeles Times, July 15, 1990.
