    Description:
A sculpture marking the grave of racehorse Native Diver, consisting of a large replica of the Hollywood Park Gold Cup mounted atop a long, horseshoe-shaped wall that serves as a base. The cup consists of a wide-mouthed, footed bowl with handles and a partially fluted exterior. Each side of the wall is decorated with long tile mosaics depicting each horserace in which Native Diver won the Gold Cup. On the west side, the 1965 and 1966 races are shown. The Diver's 1967 Gold Cup win extends the length of the east side of the base. Each mosaic is set against a background of gold tiles.

    Remarks:
The sculpture marks the grave of racehorse Native Diver, also known as The Diver, who died on September 13, 1967. Native Diver was born in 1959. During his short lifetime, The Diver amassed 34 California stakes victories and won the Hollywood Gold Cup three consecutive times. Native Diver was owned by Mr. and Mrs. L. K. Shapiro. The memorial was designed by Millard Sheets, and John Edward Svenson created the gold cup replica. It was dedicated on April 11, 1969 as part of "Native Diver Day" at the Hollywood Park Racetrack. IAS files contain related correspondence and a press release dated July 19, 1968.
