A
sculpture
depicting cartoon character Popeye the Sailor. He stands looking toward his proper left, his proper left arm bent at the elbow holding a can of spinach at eye-level. His proper right arm is bent at the elbow as he rests his hand on his proper right hip. The
sculpture
is mounted on a square redwood base with a wooden niche around the figure of Popeye. Small circular windows resembling portholes appear on either side of the niche.

downtown merchants collected $2,400 in donations to install the
sculpture
on the town's main street across from the municipal complex. The
sculpture
highlights the city's self-proclaimed status as the "Spinach Capital of the World." The
sculpture
was ordered from Mountainburg's Sharp Signs Company. IAS files contain two related articles from the Southwest Times Record, Feb. 22, 1987, pg. 2A; and March 19, 1987.
