Description:
Full-length figure of Alexander Baranof is seated on a rock which stands on a square base. The bald figure faces southeast with his proper right elbow leaning on his proper right leg and his proper left hand on his proper left thigh. He holds a rolled document in his proper right hand. He wears a double-breasted tailcoat with wide lapels and cuffs, an ascot and high collar, boots and a Russian Orthodox cross. The rock on which the figure sits is a fabrication of the
Sitka
Blarney stone, where Baranof reportedly rested during his daily walks. The base is installed in a low planter.

Remarks:
Commissioned by Lloyd and Barbara Hames and the families of Randal, Rhonda and Roger Hames as a gift to the City of
Sitka
. The cost was $60,000. The City contributed approximately $10,000 for the base, landscaping and installation of lights. The Blarney stone was sculpted separately in Santa Fe by an artisan who specializes in simulated rocks and the base was built in Kansas. The nose was stolen prior to the dedication and an attempt was made to behead the statue. The artist fashioned a temporary nose from epoxy for the dedication until it could be replaced. Daily Sentinel, May 10, 1989; May 12, 1989; Oct. 12, 1989; and Oct. 13, 1989; and a copy of the dedication program.
