Commissioned by George F. Peabody and funded through the Palmer Fund. Other casts of this relief are located at Hampton Institute, Hampton, Virginia and the Penn School on St. Helena Island, South Carolina. The image was reportedly inspired by a photograph taken at the Penn School. The relief was originally installed on the tower of the Tuskegee Chapel until it burned down on Jan. 23, 1957. Drs. Frissell and Moton were educators associated with Tuskegee Institute. IAS files include related articles from the Southern Workman, vol. 60 no. 1, Jan. 1931 and vol. 60 no. 12, Dec. 1931.
