    Description: 
    An obelisk with a pyramidal top. The front features a high relief of a soldier wearing a World War I helmet, sandals, and a drape cloth across his waist. He holds a sword in his proper right hand and a shield in his proper left hand. Behind him are a flag and an eagle. The back and sides of the obelisk are inscribed.

    Remarks: 
    Erected by the State of New Jersey, the County of Bergen, the Bergen County Historical Society, officers and men of Camp Merritt, the Camp Merritt Memorial Association, and private citizens. Commemorates the soldiers who died while on duty at Camp Merritt. Over a million American soldiers passed through Camp Merritt on their way to and from World War I.
