Remarks:
The artist chose Sacajawea's granddaughter, Hannah Leavings Grant, to serve as the model. The North Dakota Federation of Women's Clubs, working with the State Historical Society of North Dakota, led the effort to erect the sculpture of Sacajawea. The sculpture was funded through donations from the public, including pennies from schoolchildren, and sales of North Dakota Christmas Seals and postcards, which raised $3,500. In 1909, the North Dakota legislature appropriated $1,500 for the base and the expense of erecting the sculpture. IAS files contain an article from the Bismarck Daily Tribune (Bismarck, ND), Oct. 11, 1910.
