Description:
Two bas-reliefs are installed on walls flanking the entrance of the Hippach Field. The relief on the left depicts seven young men in baseball uniforms. One figure holds a bat and the others wear baseball gloves. The center figures holds a baseball in his proper right hand. The relief on the right has a football theme. There are seven figures, one is which is female. She wears a tailored jacket and mid-calf length skirt. The remaining figures wear football uniforms, except for one who wears a suit. He shakes hands with the central figure.

Provenance:
Formerly in the collection of Abbott School, Farmington, Maine 1916-1935.
Remarks:
Gift of Louis Hippach to the Abbott School in memory of his son Howard, an athlete and 1914 graduate. The gateway and field were maintained by the school until it closed in the 1930s. In 1935, the Town of Farmington assumed ownership and maintenance. IAS files include a related article from the Franklin Journal, June 6, 1916 and excerpts from the books "Two Centuries of Farmington Schools," by Richard P. Mallett.
