    Description: 
    A bronze female figure representing America, holding a myrtle wreath in each hand, stands atop a square granite base flanked by a figure of a Civil War soldier and a Civil War sailor. Each side of the granite base features a recessed rectangular inscription plaque. The monument rests on a large square base with three low steps. Within the base is a box containing historical documents and records such as the contract for the monument, an 1873 city directory, and copies of the Fitchburg Sentinel, the Boston Globe, and the New York Herald.

    Remarks: 
    Shortly after the Civil War ended a monument committee was formed and in 1869, the City of Fitchburg purchased a suitable site for the monument's installation. On April 1, 1872, the artist signed the contact for the bronze sculptures. IAS files contain newspaper articles from The Fitchburg Sentinel, Sept. 6, 1875, pg. 1-2 and the Montachusett Review, Jan. 10, 1968; and a copy of the Massachusetts Historical Commission form C - Monuments questionnaire dated April 5, 1975.
