Remarks:
Originally, the column was topped with a figure of Victory created by John Quincy Adams Ward, but the figure was damaged by lightning in 1942 and was replaced in 1957 with a figure of Liberty created by Oskar J. W. Hansen. In 1990, Hansen's figure of Liberty was struck by lightning, but was repaired in 1992. Bronze plaques on white granite bases were added in 1931, 1976, 1981, and 1983. IAS files contain a transcription of the base inscriptions that detail the history of Yorktown.
