Remarks:
Bernard J. McQuaid (1823-1909), was the first Bishop of Rochester, installed on July 16, 1868. He founded and dedicated the cemetery in which his portrait statue is located in 1871. The sculpture was designed by Joseph Sibbel Studios in New York City and cast in
Italy
in 1929.
The sculpture was originally placed on the grounds of St. Bernard's Seminary, a gift from school alumni. In September 1982, when the sculpture was relocated to the cemetery, its badly damaged base was replaced with a smaller base. Because of serious vandalism in 1988, the statue was completely restored and the hands (which had been broken off and stolen) were recast. Restoration work was done by Marte Cellura and the casting by Dexter Benedict. IAS files contain brochure entitled "Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Rochester, New York," by Robert F. McNamara.
