GREBER/SCULPTOR
Henri Greber sculpted the figures in 1910 in France, where they were cast by an unknown founder. Guy Lowell was the landscape architect for the estate owned by Clarence H. Mackay in Roslyn, New York, where the figures were originally located. Herman Frederick Simon sculpted eleven replacement parts in 1952 and had them cast by Bruno Bearzi, founder, in Italy. Edward Tanner of the architectural firm of Tanner and Associates was the architect for the Kansas City site of the fountain. Miller-Stauch Construction Company was the contractor for the basin. The fountain's figures and basin appear in the same configuration as they did when they were located on the grounds of the estate of Clarence H. Mackay. Construction of the fountain in Kansas City was funded by private contributions, the J. C. Nichols Company, and the family of J. C. Nichols. The Kansas City park department donated the land and funded the preparation of the site, including landscaping.
IAS files contain copies from Piland, Sherry, and Ellen J. Uguccioni, "Fountains of Kansas City: A History and Love Affair," Kansas City: City of Fountains Foundation, 1985, pg. 160-167, which details the history of the fountain in its original location in New York and its current location in Kansas City, and discusses the interpretation of the figures as an allegory of the four major rivers of the world. IAS files also include copies of public relations material about the fountain from the J. C. Nichols Company.
In 2004, Kansas City Adopt A Monument reported that all sculptures owned by the J. C. Nichols company should be changed to Highwoods Property.
