The totem was carved to celebrate the Last Great Potlatch at Wrangell in 1940. It was refurbished and repainted in 1974. IAS files contain copies of Wrangell Sentinel May 31, 1940, sect. 1, pg. 1-2 and May 31, 1940, sect. 1, pg. 7-8, which discuss anticipated dedication ceremonies for the new totem, then placed at head of Front Street.
