Remarks:
IAS files contain a copy of Helen Vilvich's "This is Grundy County" article, which discusses commissioning history and dedication of the monument. Five thousand dollars was appropriated for the statue in December of 1899 at a meeting of the County Board of Supervisors; and an additional five hundred dollars was contributed by the Women's Relief Corp. The original order called for a man of 4 1/2 feet to be produced; but one twice that size was done. According to a letter written by
Taft
on April 2, 1889, a Mrs. C. began working on the figure and
Taft
was to spend 2 to 3 days working on the face and hands, for which he was to receive one hundred and twenty five dollars.
