Gilbert came to Grand Rapids in 1855 and served in several civic jobs including sheriff, alderman, and state legislator. His concern for the Fulton Street Park (now Veterans Memorial Park) induced him to put up a fence, cultivate the soil, plant trees, and build walkways in the park. This bust of Thomas D. Gilbert was erected by former business associates of the City National Bank and the Grand Rapids Gas Company.
