Wayne County Historical Society of Ohio, 546 East Bowman St., Wooster, Ohio 44691 Accession Number: 1938.0507.001 (PastPerfect number: 1997.2035.001)
    Provenance:
    Gift of Stibbs, Joseph, 1938.
    Remarks:
Born in 1779 in Washington County, Pennsylvania and died in 1841 in Wooster, Ohio. He married Elizabeth Beall, the daughter of Reasin and Rebecca Beall. He built the first gristmill in Wayne County, Ohio.
Joseph Stibbs (1779-1841) was born in Pennsylvania. Came to Ohio in 1809 where he constructed the first mill in Wayne County --a grist mill on the Apple Creek a mile east of Wooster. He permanently settled in Wooster in 1817, and added a wool and oil mill to his business holdings. He died in 1841 at the age of 62. According to the Wayne County Historical Society, at the time of donation, the donor indicated the portrait was by artist Gilbert Stuart; this statement may not have been a serious attribution, but was noted on the donation information. Curator Alvin Rich noted it was highly unlikely this was a Gilbert Stuart painting. The painting may possibly have been painted by Stibbs’ son, though there is no evidence to support the attribution.
