Remarks:
The memorial was funded by the University of North Carolina Alumni and marks the burial site of the University's first president, Joseph Caldwell; his second wife, Helen Hoggs Hooper, and a son by her first marriage, Dr. William Hooper, a faculty member in ancient languages between 1810 and 1837. The symbols on the stone represent Dr. Caldwell's services to the state. The railroad wheel refers to his advocacy of rail transportation in the state; the transit records refer to his work in locating the southern boundary of the state; and the Bible alludes to his years as an ordained Presbyterian minister.
Funded by UNC Alumni Association.
