(Right side of base:) "The best laid schemes o'mice an' men/gang aft a-gley." (Left side of base:) "In fair virtue's heavenly road./The cottage leaves the palace far behind." (Back of base:) "Pleasures are like poppies spread:/you seize the flower: Its bloom is shed." Description:  Standing figure of the poet holding a copy of his poems in his proper left hand. Duplicate sculpture exists in Urbana, Illinois. Welsh & Mitchell were the contractors for the pedestal.
