    Remarks: 
    Bronze relief panels originally attached to the base of this monument depicted scenes from some of his poems; famous lines from them remain incised in the granite. Duplicate sculpture exists in Urbana, Illinois. Welsh & Mitchell were the contractors for the pedestal. The Chicago Park District Monument and Sculpture Preservation Files contain correspondence and conservation reports with photographic documentation.
