The artist and date of execution are from a memo that was made at the time the painting was restored in 1952 by Thor Solberg in Brooklyn, New York. The subject is the owner's great, great, great grandfather whose daughter Elizabeth married Rev. David Irving. The Inventory lists a portrait of Rev. David Irving by Frederick R. Spencer dated July 1846 (IAP record number 98640030).

Dr. Alfred Freeman was born Nov. 6, 1793 in Salem, New York and died March 8, 1861. He was the son of Andrew and Elizabeth Freeman. IAP files contain a copy of his obituary from The North American Journal of Homeopathy, Vol. IX, 1861.
