Concordia Theological Seminary, Board of Control 6600 North Clinton, Fort Wayne, Indiana
    Provenance:
Formerly located at Concordia Theological Seminary, Springfield, Illinois 1957-1976.
    Remarks:
This portrait of Luther was modeled after a 1526 painting by Lukas Cranach the Elder and a 1520 copper etching. The original foundry went bankrupt and Schnitzler Foundry agreed to take on the work. The sculpture was originally installed at the Springfield, Illinois campus of the Concordia Theological Seminary, but was moved to the Fort Wayne campus in the fall of 1976. Four cornerstones from the Springfield campus were incorporated into the base. A nearby plaque contains an inscription describing the history of the sculpture and the theological seminary's relocation to Fort Wayne. IAS files contain the text of this inscription and a newspaper article from the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette, Sept. 9, 1977.
