Lynn Joseph and Donna Barton drew the portrait of Gagnon which was sculpted by Schwartz. The monument was paid for through local fund-raising efforts led by Hubert McDonough, Don Duhamel and Ovide Lamontagne. The monument was dedicated on Memorial Day in honor of the 50th anniversary of the flag-raising on Iwo Jima.
