Full-length portrait of Thomas Brackett Reed stands atop a square base with a decorative border. He is a balding and portly figure wearing a suit, vest and knee-length coat. He holds a rolled-up paper in his proper left hand and his proper right hand is raised near his hip.

Remarks:
Sculpture honors Thomas Brackett Reed (1839-1902), a Portland native and Civil War veteran who served as Maine's Attorney General, a United States Congressman and Speaker of the House of Representatives. The total cost of the sculpture was $35,000. The Reed Memorial Association of Portland was responsible for the installation. The plaque was a later addition, cast by
Sheidow
Bronze
Corporation
and installed about 1989. The plaque was commissioned by Stanley T. Bennett II and David P. McKane and donated to the city. See IAS files for additional information, citations and biographical data about the sitter from the files of the Portland Historical Society.
