He also taught music at the Peabody and played the flute in the Peabody Orchestra. The sculpture was a gift to Hopkins from the City of Baltimore's Municipal Art Society in honor of Sidney Lanier.

The "Lanier Papers" at the Johns Hopkins University Archives contain additional information. The sculpture is in the collection of Johns Hopkins University, but the City of Baltimore's Department of Recreation and Parks cares for the piece under the Baltimore Bronze Project of the Commission for Historical and Architectural Preservation.
