Sculpture commemorates W. Jones Lane, who served as State Representative from the 81st District from 1961 to 1980. The sculpture honors his support of the Department of Transportation, and was erected by a resolution adopted October 16, 1980 by the State Transportation of Georgia. Jones Lane Park was dedicated at the same time as the sculpture. The adjacent section of State Highway 73 (U.S. 301) was renamed Jones Lane Memorial Highway at that time. IAS files contain a related article from the Statesboro Herald, Jan. 1981.
