    Remarks:
In 1911, Congress authorized the construction of the Champaign Memorial Lighthouse on the historic Crown Point Reservation as a memorial to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the French explorer Samuel de Champlain's arrival on Lake Champlain in 1609. The Champaign Memorial Lighthouse was constructed on the frame of an 1858 lighthouse, which was constructed on the site of a French Period (1730-1759) windmill, which in turn was located on an outlying British fort known as the Grenadier's Redoubt. The rebuilt lighthouse consists of a tower made of cut granite blocks surrounded by eight Doric columns. The tower and columns support an ornamental cut granite cornice, gallery, watch room, and lantern parapet. The base and brick stair cylinder of the original 1858 lighthouse were incorporated into the new structure, which was completed in July 1912.
"La Belle France" relief plaque is a gift from France in honor of the tercentenary of Samuel de Champlain's discovery of New York's Lake Champlain that bears his name. The female figure was reportedly modeled after the sculptor's mistress, Camille. For further information, see the Ticonderoga Sentinels of May to July 1912.
