Remarks:
Antonio Guzman Blanco was the president of Venezuela in three separate terms: 1870-1877, 1879-1884, and 1886-1888. The statue of Antonio Guzman Blanco, once installed outdoors, was made for the Venezuelan government in 1874, but was destroyed by a mob in 1889. The face (see IAS 71501257) and right hand (IAS record 71501258) of the statue were saved. IAS files contain an image of the statue before it was destroyed (see IAS record 71501245).
The statue was first installed in El Calvario, Calle Real La Planicie, Distrito Capital, Caracas, 1030 Venezuela. It was torn down by a mob on December 22, 1878. Reinstalled in same place on July 5, 1879 and torn down again and destroyed in 1889. Two fragments of the statue remain in two separate Venezuelan institutions: the face (IAS record 71501257) is owned by Galeria de Arte Nacional – Fundación Museos Nacionales) and the left hand (see IAS 71501258) is owned by Fundación John Boulton.
Antonio Guzman Blanco, born in Caracas, Venezuela (February 28, 1829), died in Paris, France (July 28, 1899). President of Venezuela in three separate terms: 1870-1877, 1879-1884 and 1886-1888. He has been regarded as the greatest example of the illustrated autocrat, given his undeniable ability to promote progress in Venezuela, his extraordinary education and broad cultural background, but always with the full intention of concentrating power in his person. Antonio Guzman Blanco was Consul of the Venezuelan Government in Philadelphia (1856-1857) and in New York (1857-1858). In Washington D.C. he was Secretary of the Venezuelan delegation (1858-1859).
