Description:
"The sculpture is of a standing figure with the head tilted slightly upwards, looking forward. The proper left hand is holding a book and the proper right hand is placed over the book. The figure is wearing a long flowing robe over what appears to be clothing. The collar is showing. The proper right foot is placed forward from the body."

Rietschel
, died in 1861, before the work was finished. His assistants completed the work, and the original sculpture was dedicated in 1883 in Worms. This cast, acquired by Concordia Seminary in 1903 as a gift of Luther and Walther Monument Association, was first placed on the former campus of the Seminary on South Jefferson Avenue in St. Louis. It was moved to the Clayton campus about 1924.
