MAY 14, 1862/INSPECTOR AND CHIEF OF LIGHT ARTILLERY/DEPARTMENT OF MISSISSIPPI/AND EAST LOUISIANA/C.S.A. FEB. 18, 1863 signed Founder's mark appears. Description:  A bust of Colonel William Temple Withers dressed in a military uniform. He wears a mustache and a beard. The bust is placed atop an incised, two-sectioned base that is decorated on the upper front with the relief of a wreath of oak leaves. He died June 16, 1889. The pedestal was damaged when it was struck by a car around 1976 and replaced. The monument is on the National Park Service List of Classified Structures (LCS no. 03356). IAS files contain a copy of the LCS report form. Cost $2,000 paid by the family. The sculpture has been moved since its original installation.
