Description:
A bust of Colonel William Temple Withers dressed in a military uniform. He wears a mustache and a beard. The bust is placed atop an incised, two-sectioned base that is decorated on the upper front with the relief of a wreath of oak leaves.

Remarks:
William Temple Withers, born January 8, 1825, served as a Lieutenant in the Mexican American War and as a Colonel with the C.S.A. where he was Inspector and Chief of Light Artillery for the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana during the siege of Vicksburg. He died June 16, 1889. The pedestal was damaged when it was struck by a car around 1976 and replaced. The monument is on the National Park Service List of Classified Structures (LCS no. 03356). IAS files contain a copy of the LCS report form. Cost $2,000 paid by the family. The sculpture has been moved since its original installation.
