Description:
Atop a tall granite base is an equestrian portrait of Robert E. Lee astride his horse Traveller. He holds the horse's reins in his proper left hand. The sculpture rests atop an elaborate granite base, the east and west sides of which are adorned with gray marble columns.

Remarks:
The sculpture cost nearly $17,000 and the base cost between $10,000 and $12,000. The base was designed by
architect
Paul
Pujol
and was executed by James Netherwood. The sculpture was exhibited in Paris before being dismantled and shipped to Richmond. It was the first statue constructed on Monument Avenue in Richmond. IAS files contain newspaper articles from the Richmond Times-Dispatch, May 6, 1890; March 20, 1890; and Feb. 26, 1893.
